Maui photos from the road BEYOND Hana! If you have the time, you should make this drive all the way around Haleakala. The Maui Revealed book was absolutely right. This is very doable! We never felt unsafe. The terrain changes from tropical to arid and dry, and back to tropical again. Just an amazing drive!

Musings on Maui
We visited Maui in January of 2012 for the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. The conference was held at the Grand Wailea Resort in southwest Maui.
We took the road to Hana and beyond, driving all the way around. The views surpassed anything I could have imagined! Sweeping views with climates changing from lush and tropical to windswept and arid on the very southern tip, and before turning back to civilization. Yes, sections of the road are partly paved or gravel. But we never felt worried, and would highly recommend driving this awe inspiring road!
